Quality management system of Indian honey for export.

There are mainly two market segments for honey all over the world,namely:

1. Table honey
2. industrial honeyN

‘Table honey” is used by households for different consumption. Almost 60-70% of total production of honey is consumed as table honey. Where as “industrial honey” accounts for about 35-40% consumed in industrial products like bakery,Confectionary, cereals,mainly in usa,Japan and Italy. In most industrially developed countries likeU.S.A.,U.K.,Germany, etc. the consumption of industrial honey is as high as 60% However, inIndia, so far there is no such gradation and awareness about honey. In view of the rapid increase in demand of honey, both in indigenous market and export, it is essential to take full advantage and grab the opportunity by way of assured quality.

WORLD MARKET OF HONEY

    World honey production has increased consistently since 1980s. The average total world production was 1.12 million tones between 1980 and 2001. Production was stable at 1.12 to 1.15 million tones during 1992 to 1995. World honey production has increased rapidly to 1.27 million tones in 2001. The world honey production is mainly located in Asia, Europe andNorth America. The main honey producing areas in Asia are mostly in china,TurkeyandIndia. The total honey production in these three countries amounts to more than 85%ofAsia’s total output.(bee world,2003). During 1980s, 22-29% of the world honey production was used for international trade. This was stabilized at about 25% since 1990. World honey export increased from 211,400 to 309,200 tones between 1980 and 1986 and that fell to 261,600 tones in 1988. It was increased from 280,000 to 308,000 tones in 1991 to 1995 and then declined. However, world honey exports increasing and reaching as high as 374,500 tones in 2000.Asiais the biggest exporting continent. There is a great demand for Indian honey in developed countries, if proper quality, as per international standards, are maintained. Quality of Indian honey well comparable to that of international/Codex standards. Quality of Indian forest honey also can be improved by proper collection and processing.

EXPORTS OF INDIAN HONEY TO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES  

There has been a remarkable increase almost three times of total exports of honey.Germanyis a biggest buyer of Indian honey and almost doubled the supply of honey in four years.U.S.A.is the second largest country for consumption of Indian honey. Almost 2000 tones honey was exported toU.S.A.during the year 2002-2003. the total quantity of Indian honey exported was 5961 M.T. at value of Rs.4593 lakhs. Hardly 7to10 countries are benefited by the exports of the Indian honey. Therefore, at several other prospective countries of Asia,Africaand Europe etc., may be covered under exports of Indian honey, projecting the vast scope.
